Very few of the famous 1950s Topps variations are on key HOF cards let alone on the most popular pitcher of his time second year card. How this could happen would only be two guesses Topps for some reason didn’t like that there wasn’t enough sand behind sandy so Topps added more sand? Not likely! Possibly a breif printing error similar to 1956 pepper patch card. I consider it a must have for any Koufax player run or 1956 master set builder. How rare is it? There’s usually 100+ 1956 Koufax’s for sale on eBay and only 2 or 3 of these at a time with the sand patch behind his ear.
